How To Find a Mentor

Finding a Mentor: A new take on an old concept (Hint: it’s easier than you think.)

What Is A Mentor?

If you’ve ever listened to an interview of a highly successful person, you will undoubtedly come across the same theme: they had a mentor. A Mentor is a highly skilled, successful individual within their specialty, who offers knowledge and advice to the Mentee (person who is in need of the advice).

That sounds fantastic, right? But how do you find a mentor when you aren’t yet sure of who to go to, or how to start such a relationship? This is where things get interesting, and the traditional rules need not apply.

How To Find The Right Mentor

Finding a mentor can seem like an overwhelming process, with finding a person you admire in a certain area of business or life, to setting up a pitch that will interest them to take you on as a mentee (honestly, it takes a good amount of time from their lives!) , to establishing a framework for how the relationship will function. All of this can leave you feeling stressed out, and doubting whether you even need it.

Here’s the secret: there’s millions of fantastic mentors out there, and the old rules of how a Mentor-Mentee relationship works no longer apply

With the advent of the internet, and especially with the overwhelmingly free access to Podcasts, you can have your pick of thousands (if not millions) of potential mentors, right from the comfort of your own home (or car, or office, or park … ). Are you looking for someone to give you advice on starting a business, how to become an influential speaker, how to be a better parent? You can find practically anything you want in the Podcasting or Video sphere, and the best part is – there’s no strings attached. If you try out a podcast and don’t jive with the host, move on to the next! No hard feelings – no explanation necessary. The wonderful part about listening to others speak about their own experiences is that you’re hearing their voice directly, so the content of what they are saying is better understood, and it also gives you a variety of viewpoints that you can try on for yourself, and leave behind whatever doesn’t work for you

The only difference between finding an expert on a Podcast or Video versus a personal relationship with the Mentor, is that the advice and experiences you get are not directly related to your needs. In my opinion, this only makes a significant difference when you are looking for something very specific that needs feedback on your progress. Some people do fine by self-monitoring and trying out a variety of new ideas, whereas others require more of a hands-on approach and relationship in order to determine what is working for them, and to ensure that the accountability is there to make lasting changes in their lives.

How A Mentor Can Help You Up-Level Your Life

Either way you look at it, adding in resources from various experts and thought leaders is not going to hinder you in any way- if anything, it will add more value to your life by expanding your awareness and giving you new perspectives and appreciation for things you may not have encountered before.

For example, if you are looking to advance in your career or start a new business venture, listening to Podcasts that are dedicated to sharing stories of entrepreneurs or successful CEO’s can be incredibly valuable to you. Being able to garner the wisdom of those who have been there before you is an absolute game-changer in understanding what common threads are found between these people, what their biggest challenges were, and how they overcame them.

Learning from others is fundamental in the development and progress of our own lives, and in some respects, this is an unfortunate casualty of the social media era. While many people are out in the world sharing their knowledge and experiences to help facilitate a shift in mindset of those looking to develop themselves, a large portion  of the potential benefactors are overly consumed with managing their image online, rather than reaping the rewards of these experts. In some ways, we have lost the art of curiosity that enables us to grow – but I have faith that we can tune back in to what truly empowers us, rather than what currently consumes us.
